Maximum use concentration (MUC)

MUC = APF × OEL

The maximum use concentration (MUC) is the highest airborne concentration of a contaminant at which a given respirator may be worn. It is the respirator’s assigned protection factor (APF) multiplied by the occupational exposure limit (OEL) — usually the OSHA PEL or NIOSH REL. OSHA defines it in 29 CFR 1910.134(d)(3)(i)(B).

The MUC formula, step by step

  1. Find the respirator’s APF from OSHA Table 1 (e.g. half-mask = 10, full-facepiece = 50).
  2. Find the substance’s OEL (PEL or REL), in ppm or mg/m³.
  3. Multiply: MUC = APF × OEL.
  4. Compare to the IDLH — if the MUC is higher, cap it at the IDLH.

MUC and the IDLH

The maximum use concentration can never exceed the Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health value. When APF × OEL produces a number above the IDLH, the IDLH becomes the effective ceiling. Our calculator applies this cap automatically when you supply an IDLH.

What is the maximum use concentration (MUC)?

The maximum use concentration is the highest airborne concentration of a hazardous substance at which a given respirator may be used. It is calculated as the respirator’s assigned protection factor (APF) multiplied by the occupational exposure limit (OEL): MUC = APF × OEL.

What is the MUC formula?

MUC = APF × OEL. For example, a full-facepiece air-purifying respirator (APF 50) used against a substance with a 50 ppm PEL has an MUC of 50 × 50 = 2,500 ppm. The MUC must never exceed the substance’s IDLH value.

How does OSHA define MUC?

Under 29 CFR 1910.134(d)(3)(i)(B), the employer must ensure the MUC — the APF times the exposure limit — is not exceeded, and that it never exceeds the IDLH. If the calculated MUC is higher than the IDLH, the IDLH becomes the limit.

What happens if the MUC exceeds the IDLH?

The MUC is capped at the IDLH. Above the IDLH, air-purifying respirators are not permitted at all — only a full-facepiece pressure-demand SCBA or a supplied-air respirator with an auxiliary self-contained air supply may be used.
