What respirator do I need for asbestos?

Asbestos is a confirmed human carcinogen with NO known safe exposure level; a respirator is the LAST line of defense and is never adequate by itself — it must be combined with wet methods, HEPA vacuuming, sealed containment, negative-pressure enclosure, decontamination, and proper waste disposal. Federally regulated by OSHA (29 CFR 1926.1101 construction, 1910.1001 general industry) and EPA (Asbestos NESHAP, AHERA, TSCA). Respirators must be NIOSH-approved, fit-tested to the wearer, and used under a written respiratory-protection program (29 CFR 1910.134); tight-fitting masks fail on facial hair. Intact, undisturbed asbestos material is generally best LEFT ALONE — disturbing it is what creates the airborne fiber hazard. Even taking a sample yourself is discouraged by EPA because improper handling releases fibers.
When to call a professional: STRONGLY recommend hiring a licensed/accredited asbestos abatement professional — do not attempt DIY removal. EPA advises leaving intact asbestos-containing material undisturbed and warns that improper removal can INCREASE your family's exposure. Sampling and removal should be done by state/EPA-accredited asbestos inspectors and contractors (use separate firms for inspection vs. removal to avoid conflict of interest). Many states and municipalities legally restrict or prohibit unlicensed asbestos removal, and disposal is regulated. Any friable material, damaged material, or a renovation/demolition that would disturb suspected asbestos = call a pro.
NIOSH-approved half-mask ELASTOMERIC (rubber) air-purifying respirator fitted with P100 (HEPA-class, 100-series, often magenta) particulate filters. Note: a disposable filtering-facepiece is expressly NOT allowed by OSHA for asbestos even if P100-rated; a half-mask APR carries an OSHA assigned protection factor (APF) of only 10, so it is a bare legal minimum for the lowest-exposure incidental tasks, not for removal.
Do not DIY. Proper abatement uses either a P100/HEPA Powered Air-Purifying Respirator (PAPR) or a full-facepiece supplied-air respirator (SAR) in pressure-demand mode — worn by a licensed/accredited abatement contractor with fit-testing, training, wet methods and full containment. OSHA requires a full-facepiece SAR in pressure-demand mode WITH an auxiliary positive-pressure SCBA once airborne fibers exceed 1 f/cc (8-hr TWA). A full-facepiece APR with P100 gives an APF of only 50, which caps its use.
Which filter or cartridge?
P100 particulate filter (NIOSH 42 CFR Part 84 HEPA-class; N100/R100 also acceptable). Asbestos is a solid fiber/particulate, NOT a vapor — a HEPA-class particulate filter is what removes it. No chemical/gas cartridge (e.g. organic-vapor) is needed or relevant, and a cartridge alone does nothing against fibers.
What NOT to use
Cloth, surgical, or nuisance 'dust' masks; painter's/comfort masks; a bare N95 or any disposable filtering-facepiece (OSHA disallows filtering-facepieces for asbestos, and N95 is below the required HEPA/P100 level); any respirator that is not fit-tested; and any organic-vapor or acid-gas chemical cartridge used on its own (wrong hazard type — asbestos is a particulate, not a vapor).
