What respirator do I need for lead paint removal & sanding?

Lead is a cumulative neurotoxin; there is no safe blood-lead level, and it is especially dangerous to children under 6 and pregnant women — keep them (and pets) completely out of the home during work and until cleared. Assume any pre-1978 paint contains lead unless tested. Control the hazard, don't just filter it: contain the area with plastic, use wet methods (mist/wet-sand) and power tools with HEPA-vacuum shrouds, HEPA-vacuum (never dry-sweep) and wet-wipe daily, bag debris in sealed heavy plastic. Prevent take-home lead: wear disposable coveralls/shoe covers, don't wear work clothes home, wash hands and face before eating/drinking/smoking. Tight-fitting respirators must be fit-tested and worn clean-shaven to seal. Reference/PPE guidance only — not a substitute for OSHA-required exposure assessment on paid job sites.

When to call a professional: Hire an EPA Lead-Safe Certified renovator/firm for large jobs, exterior work, whole-window or whole-house scope, extensive surfaces, or any job where you can't reliably contain dust. Certification is LEGALLY REQUIRED (not just recommended) under the EPA RRP Rule for paid contractors, and for owners who rent out the home, run a child-care facility in it, or renovate to flip/sell — the DIY exemption only covers work on your own residence. Strongly consider a professional whenever young children or a pregnant person live in the home, or if you are unsure whether you can work lead-safe.

Minimum

NIOSH-approved half-mask (or filtering-facepiece) respirator fitted with an N100 particulate filter. This is the specific minimum the EPA recommends for DIYers disturbing lead paint. A bare N95/dust mask is NOT adequate for a toxic dust like lead.

Recommended

NIOSH-approved reusable half-mask (elastomeric) respirator with P100 (HEPA-level, magenta) filters, properly fit-tested and worn clean-shaven. Step up to a full-facepiece P100 or a PAPR with HEPA filters for large, dusty, prolonged, or overhead work. OSHA 1926.62 requires at least a half-mask air-purifying respirator with high-efficiency (HEPA-equivalent) filters for lead work up to 500 ug/m3, moving to PAPR/full-face/supplied-air as airborne lead rises.

Which filter or cartridge?

P100 particulate filter (HEPA-equivalent, 99.97% at 0.3 micron; typically magenta). P100 is preferred over N100/R100 because it is oil-resistant, which matters when heat guns or oil-based lead paint aerosolize oily residue. N100 is an acceptable minimum for dry dust only. NOTE: a particulate filter alone is correct for sanding/scraping dust, but if a SOLVENT-BASED chemical paint stripper is used you also need an organic-vapor cartridge (OV + P100 combination), and methylene-chloride strippers require supplied-air, not an APR.

What NOT to use

Do NOT rely on a cloth mask, surgical mask, bandana, or a nuisance/comfort 'dust mask' with no NIOSH rating — none stop lead dust. A bare N95 is only a marginal filtering-facepiece and is not what EPA recommends for lead (EPA specifies N100 minimum); N95 gives no oil-aerosol protection. A particulate filter of any class does nothing against solvent vapors from chemical strippers. Never dry-sand, dry-scrape, power-sand without a HEPA shroud, open-flame burn/torch, or use a heat gun above 1100 degrees F on lead paint — all are RRP-prohibited practices that massively increase airborne lead.
