What respirator do I need for drywall sanding / joint-compound dust?
NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator (disposable, APF 10). Acceptable for light, occasional DIY sanding done with dust controls. Must be a genuine NIOSH-approved N95 (stamped 'NIOSH' + 'N95'), worn on a clean-shaven face with a good seal.
Reusable elastomeric half-mask respirator fitted with P100 particulate filters (APF 10, 99.97% efficiency). P100 is the robust choice for sustained/professional finishing and whenever the joint compound contains crystalline silica: it filters more efficiently, clogs more slowly, and seals better than a disposable. For heavy or all-day exposure, pair the respirator with wet sanding or a vacuum (dust-collecting) sander. NIOSH recommends a half-facepiece with an N95-or-better filter for silica at or below 0.5 mg/m3.
Which filter or cartridge?
NIOSH particulate filter only. N95 minimum; P100 (100-series / HEPA-equivalent, magenta filter) preferred. No gas or vapor (organic-vapor / chemical) cartridge is needed for dry sanding, because the hazard is airborne dust, not vapor.
What NOT to use
Do NOT rely on a loose cloth or foam 'comfort' dust mask, a bandana, a surgical/procedure mask, or any non-NIOSH-approved mask — none of these reliably filter fine drywall or silica dust. A paper mask worn loosely, or any tight-fitting respirator worn over a beard/stubble, leaks around the seal and gives little real protection. You do NOT need an organic-vapor or chemical cartridge for dry sanding (that is for solvent/paint vapors, not dust).
Safety notes
Joint-compound (mud) dust is a respiratory irritant that causes throat/airway irritation, cough, phlegm and asthma-like symptoms, and it commonly contains a small percentage of respirable crystalline silica (and sometimes kaolin clay and talc). NIOSH Health Hazard Evaluations measured drywall-sanding dust at up to ~10x OSHA's 15 mg/m3 total-dust PEL, with silica present. A respirator is the LAST line of defense — control the dust at the source first: wet-sand/wet-finish, use a vacuum-equipped (dust-collecting) pole/disc sander, use a HEPA vacuum for cleanup (never dry-sweep), and ventilate. Any tight-fitting respirator only works clean-shaven and properly fitted.
When to call a professional
STOP and get materials tested before sanding if the home was built or last renovated before ~1980: older joint compound and textured/'popcorn' ceiling coatings sometimes contained ASBESTOS, and if positive the work is legally restricted and needs a licensed asbestos abatement professional (do not dry-sand or disturb it). Pre-1978 painted walls may also have LEAD paint — use a certified renovator under the EPA RRP Rule and P100/HEPA controls for large jobs. For daily occupational drywall finishing, OSHA's respirable crystalline silica standard (29 CFR 1926.1153) and the respiratory protection standard (29 CFR 1910.134) require a written program with medical clearance and fit testing.
