What respirator do I need for wood dust?
A NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator (disposable). Acceptable only for light, occasional softwood sanding with good ventilation, and only if it is a genuine NIOSH-rated N95 that seals to the face — not a comfort/nuisance dust mask.
A reusable half-mask (elastomeric) respirator fitted with P100 (HEPA-level) particulate filters. Use it for fine dust, hardwoods (carcinogenic), power sanding/routing/turning, and any prolonged or heavy work. NIOSH's own guidance for wood dust above its exposure limit calls for a full-facepiece air-purifying respirator with N100/R100/P100 filters.
Which filter or cartridge?
Particulate filter, N-, R-, or P-series (wood dust is a non-oil solid aerosol, so all three series apply). N95 = minimum; P100 (magenta, HEPA-level, 99.97% efficient) = recommended for fine and hardwood dust. No chemical / organic-vapor cartridge is needed for sanding dust alone.
What NOT to use
Do not rely on a cloth mask, bandana, surgical mask, or an unrated 'nuisance' or 'comfort' dust mask — none are NIOSH-approved, none seal properly, and they let fine carcinogenic dust straight through. Also note that a particulate filter alone does NOTHING against the solvent vapors from stains, lacquers, and polyurethane finishes; that separate step needs an organic-vapor cartridge with a P-series pre-filter.
Safety notes
Wood dust is a confirmed human carcinogen (IARC Group 1; U.S. National Toxicology Program 'known to be a human carcinogen'), causing cancer of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses; hardwoods (oak, beech, mahogany, walnut, birch, elm, ash) carry the strongest evidence. A respirator supplements, and does not replace, dust collection / local exhaust ventilation. Tight-fitting respirators only work if they seal, so facial hair defeats them. Watch for extra hazards: pressure-treated / CCA lumber (arsenic and chromium), MDF and particleboard (formaldehyde vapor), western red cedar (asthma trigger), and mold in spalted or damp wood. Fine wood dust is also a fire and explosion hazard. NIOSH REL is 1 mg/m3 TWA (0.5 mg/m3 for western red cedar); there is no wood-dust-specific OSHA PEL (enforced under PNOR at 15 mg/m3 total / 5 mg/m3 respirable) and no established IDLH.
When to call a professional
Routine hobby or trade woodworking does not require a professional. BUT sanding painted surfaces in a home built before 1978 can release LEAD dust — stop and follow EPA RRP lead-paint precautions with P100 filters, and hire an EPA-certified renovator for large jobs. Older buildings may also contain asbestos in some materials. For large-scale or daily commercial exposure, have an industrial hygienist assess the exposure and arrange formal respirator fit-testing.
