What respirator do I need for spray painting?

ISOCYANATES are the dominant hazard in 2K/polyurethane, epoxy, automotive basecoat/clearcoat, and spray-foam products. OSHA: positive-pressure air-line respirators are the only NIOSH-approved respirators for employees engaged in spray operations who are exposed to isocyanates, and a full-facepiece is required because isocyanates irritate the eyes and cause respiratory sensitization. Isocyanates have poor warning properties (you cannot reliably smell dangerous levels) and cause occupational asthma; once sensitized, even trace exposures can trigger severe, sometimes life-threatening attacks — there is no safe re-exposure. Cartridges have a limited service life: change on a documented schedule, never rely on odor breakthrough as the signal. Any tight-fitting respirator requires a clean-shaven seal and (in a workplace) fit testing and a written respiratory-protection program per 29 CFR 1910.134; facial hair defeats the seal. Always combine respirators with good ventilation/exhaust — solvent vapors are also flammable and an explosion/fire hazard. Some primers and industrial/automotive/aerospace coatings contain hexavalent chromium (chromate pigments) or lead, adding a toxic-particulate hazard that reinforces the need for a P100 filter. Respirators are the last line of defense — engineering controls (spray booth, ventilation) come first.
When to call a professional: Call / hire a professional (or use a proper spray booth with supplied-air) for: automotive body refinishing and any 2K/polyurethane/epoxy/clearcoat spraying (isocyanates); spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation; and any large-volume or enclosed-space spraying. Isocyanate spraying is not a safe casual DIY task with a hardware-store cartridge respirator — it requires supplied-air equipment, training, and ventilation. If unsure whether a product contains isocyanates, check the Safety Data Sheet (look for 'isocyanate', MDI, TDI, HDI, or 'Part B/hardener') and treat it as isocyanate-containing if in doubt.
For NON-isocyanate paints only (latex/water-based, alkyd/enamel, lacquer, single-component solvent aerosols): a NIOSH-approved reusable (elastomeric) HALF-MASK air-purifying respirator fitted with an organic-vapor (OV) cartridge PLUS a P95 or P100 particulate pre-filter, i.e. a combination OV/P100 setup. A disposable dust mask or bare N95 is NOT acceptable.
Best practice depends on the paint: (1) Single-component solvent/aerosol/latex paints -> half- or full-face elastomeric respirator with COMBINATION OV/P100 cartridges; full-face preferred for eye protection and higher assigned protection factor. (2) Two-part '2K', polyurethane, epoxy, or automotive basecoat/clearcoat paints (ISOCYANATES) -> a SUPPLIED-AIR RESPIRATOR: positive-pressure, full-facepiece air-line (Type-C) respirator, or SCBA. Per OSHA this is the only NIOSH-approved respirator class for isocyanate spray operations.
Which filter or cartridge?
Organic Vapor (OV) chemical cartridge + P100 particulate filter, ideally a single combination OV/P100 cartridge. NIOSH color coding: black band = organic vapor, magenta = P100. The OV sorbent adsorbs solvent vapor (xylene, toluene, MEK, acetone) while the P100 captures atomized paint mist/overspray. For isocyanate (2K/polyurethane/auto clearcoat) paints, NO air-purifying cartridge is considered adequate -> use supplied air.
What NOT to use
Do NOT use: a bare N95 or any particulate-only filter/dust mask (captures mist but passes solvent VAPOR straight through — useless for fumes); a cloth or surgical mask (no protection); a nuisance/'painters' dust mask; an OV-only cartridge with no particulate pre-filter (lets paint aerosol through). Critically, do NOT rely on ANY negative-pressure air-purifying respirator when spraying isocyanate-containing 2K/polyurethane/epoxy or automotive clearcoat paints.
